My grandfather is from... Kythrea
This is a book I illustrated for the municipality of Kythrea in Cyprus. It is called 'My grandfather is from... Kythrea'. This was a local project initiated by the municipality. In the story, a grandfather recounts numerous childhood memories of the town he was born and raised in to his granddaughter Ariadne. The book deals with the themes of war, of being uprooted from one's place of birth and becoming a refugee, loss, memory, the transmission of old traditions to the younger generation, and eventually finding hope and new meaning. The book was awarded the State Prize for Literature for Young Children for publications of the year 2021. It has also been selected by the Cyprus IBBY to represent Cyprus in the IBBY Honour List 2024 in the Illustration category (IBBY: International Board on Books for Young People).
